Prof. Rose is a mathematician with interests in topology and representations theory, which is a fancy way of saying that he uses modern algebraic tools to study qualitative properties of geometric spaces. His current research (for which he was recently awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER award) focuses on homological invariants of knots and their relation to topological quantum field theory. Outside of work, he enjoys cooking, listening to vinyl, and rock climbing (wherein knot theory meets practice).
