Sue Estroff a medical anthropologist with post doctoral training in psychiatry who does research on difference and disability. She has been teaching medical students and residents in the UNC School of Medicine in the Department of Social Medicine since 1982. Estroff also has an appointment in the UNC Department of Anthropology. Her research and teaching focus on learning from people living with stigmatized and debilitating conditions such as schizophrenia, spina bifida, addictions, sensory deficits, mobility challenges, and addictions to name a few. Her teaching involves experiential and personalized learning, collaboration with and among students, and learning from science as well as first person narratives, literature, film, politics, and advocacy. Estroff was UNC faculty chair from 2000-03 and is still involved in faculty governance. She received a post baccalaureate teaching award in the past and looks forward to learning with and from undergraduate students. Estroff lives with two golden retrievers who keep her on the trails in Duke Forest, and busy making sure they don’t eat deer droppings, sticks, and pinecones.
