Saunders is a cultural anthropologist, recovering ER doc, and long-ago wet lab bench worker. Though his institutional home is in the Department of Social Medicine in the School of Medicine, he also has appointments in Anthropology, Communication Studies, & Religious Studies. He teaches in and co-directs the UNC medical students’ required preclinical courses in Social and Health Systems. He has long been interested in how we know what we know, and what we consider “evidence.” He remembers well how crucial some particular professors were, early in his own UNC undergraduate education, in helping him begin to learn how to think.
